The Lowdown on Carpal Tunnel

Updated: Nov 6, 2020

Many people seek medical attention regarding numbness and pain in their hand. The most common cause is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS).

Multiple factors play a role in the cause of CTS, but genetics is the most important factor. A small carpal tunnel predisposes one to CTS. Repetitive movements, hormonal changes related to pregnancy, older age, and common medical conditions, including diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and thyroid gland imbalance may also play a role.

Symptoms include numbness, tingling, and pain of the thumb, index, and long fingers. These symptoms also may awaken you from sleep. Symptoms initially come and go, but over time they may become constant. If the condition is severe, muscles at the base of the thumb may become visibly wasted.

Symptoms usually resolve with anti-inflammatory medicines and physical therapy. However, surgery may be needed to ultimately regain full functionality of the hand.
