Volunteers and Supplies needed for Ethiopia Project

Updated: Feb 28, 2023

Last year, you may have read that RVMC Nurse Practitioner, Amy Braaksma, was taking a medical mission to rural Mongolia to teach heart health, feminine hygiene and wound care. The trip was a wonderful success!

Amy's 2023 medical mission will be to Ethiopia. For the Ethiopia trip, in addition to taking reusable feminine hygiene pads made by Ruby Valley volunteers, Amy is also taking dresses! On February 18th, a group of ambitious Ruby Valley sewers got together and started work on the dresses and reusable feminine hygiene pads. Another work session will likely be scheduled for Saturday, March 4th starting at 10am at the Bethany Hall at Bethel Methodist Church in Sheridan, 211 South Main Street.

If you would like to donate to this project to support women in Ethiopia, Amy's team is in immediate need of 1/2" bias tape for the dresses. You can drop off donations of bias tape at the Twin Bridges Clinic (104 S. Madison Street) or the Ruby Valley Medical Center (321 Madison Street, Sheridan).

The volunteers are also accepting donations of 100% cotton flannel, 100% cotton washcloths, and thick 100% cotton fabric for the dresses. (The dress fabric needs to be completely opaque and not see-through.)

If you would like to volunteer for a sewing workday, no sewing experience needed, please email rvmc406@gmail.com with your contact information. The team needs help with cutting out the dresses, ironing, machine sewing and hand hemming. Remote volunteering is also greatly appreciated.
