Summary

Responsible for direct interaction with patients, while obtaining samples to be tested in the lab by means of venipuncture, capillary puncture or swabs collection. Report directly to the Laboratory Manager

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (and others, to be assigned)

1. Collecting venous blood samples by performing venipuncture, capillary punctures, and collecting blood cultures.

2. Collecting throat cultures, and other samples with the appropriate training.

3. Properly identify the patients, using facility policy, and label their samples per laboratory policy.

4. Correctly perform data entry of patient information, tests ordered and diagnosis in the laboratory portion of the Electronic Medical Record and the reference laboratory computer.

5. Follow the facility policy and procedure for medical necessity of test ordering and related paperwork such as ABN.

6. Perform certain waived test as agreed upon by the laboratory staff.

7. Answers the phone and satisfies caller questions or routes calls to other laboratory staff.

8. Perform duties on the phlebotomy check list, such as procedure controls and temperature checks.

9. Be proficient with all the EMR processes for lab result entry, and manage the send out tests and the resulting of them in the EMR.

10. Work with several computer programs for test ordering and test resulting, requiring strong computer skills.

11. Assist the lab testing personnel in preventative maintenance of instruments and other non-testing duties.

12. Attend laboratory meetings.

13. Assist other departments as needed.

14. Follow the facility policy for confidentiality and compliance.

15. Satisfactory time and attendance.

1. Education and experience:

Must have a high school diploma or equivalent. Phlebotomy training and/or certification is desirable.

2. Special Skills:

Must have strong customer service and computer skills.

Phlebotomy certification is desirable.

1. Employee must be able to effectively communicate with other hospital staff, patients, and the public. This includes hearing, speech, and sight. Corrective devices are allowed, but laboratory staff must be able to pass a color blind test upon hire.

2. Employee must be able to use instruments and computer keyboards.

3. Employee must be able to work effectively under emergency conditions and in a stressful environment.

4. Ability to safely lift and carry up to 50 pounds, manipulate joints, frequently stoop or bend at the waist, kneel/sit/stand for extended periods, and maintain adequate physical condition to perform the functions of the job, as required. Work Environment

While performing the normal and regular functions of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving or mechanical parts, toxic or caustic chemicals, infectious tissues or samples, and risks electrical shock. Additionally, equipment necessary for the storage of chemical reagents or biological specimens and the clinical testing of these same items permit exposure to noise that is unavoidable. All attempts will be made to limit the amount of noise to avoid permanent damage or hearing loss. As such, the noise level in the lab is low to moderate.
